Salmon DNA Skincare: Salmon PDRN, Sodium DNA and Plant Alternatives
Salmon DNA is one of the most talked-about skincare ingredients of the decade. Here is where it comes from, how to spot it on a label, how it compares with plant PDRN, and which formats are worth trying.
What is salmon DNA skincare?
"Salmon DNA skincare" is the everyday name for products that contain PDRN — polydeoxyribonucleotide — extracted from salmonid fish. On an ingredient list it usually appears as sodium DNA. The trend began with in-clinic skin boosters in Korea and has since moved into creams, serums, ampoules, sheet masks and PDRN eye patches.
If you want the science first, start with our explainer What is PDRN? This guide focuses on the salmon side of the story: sourcing, labels and alternatives.
Where salmon PDRN comes from
PDRN was first isolated from human placenta. Today it is mostly extracted from the sperm cells (milt) of salmonid fish such as chum salmon and rainbow trout. The raw material goes through extraction and extensive purification until what is left is a highly purified DNA fraction — fragments typically in the 50 to 1,500 kDa range.
The finished ingredient does not smell or look fishy. It is a clear, odourless material that blends into gels and creams like any other cosmetic active.
How to spot salmon DNA on a label
Brands describe the same ingredient in several ways. Look for:
- Sodium DNA — the most common ingredient-list name
- PDRN or salmon PDRN — marketing names
- Polynucleotides / PN — related DNA-derived ingredients, often from salmon
- Branded names such as REJURAN's c-PDRN
Product pages also tend to state the source directly ("salmon-derived PDRN", "ginseng PDRN"). If a brand does not say, it is fair to ask them.
Salmon PDRN vs plant PDRN
| Salmon PDRN | Plant PDRN | |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Milt of salmonid fish, highly purified | Botanicals such as ginseng |
| Research background | The source used in most published PDRN studies | Newer; far less published research |
| Vegan | No | Usually yes (check the whole formula) |
| Fish allergy | Not ideal — ask a doctor first | Fish-free PDRN |
| Examples in our lineup | Feel1, medicube, Biodance, DERMALINE, Anua | VT Cosmetics; Abib (reported) |
Both are DNA fragments, but they are not interchangeable raw materials. Results from salmon PDRN studies should not automatically be assumed for plant PDRN, and vice versa. Some brands, such as COSRX, blend several sources into one complex.
Salmon DNA products: which format suits you?
Eye patches
The most popular entry point. A hydrogel patch holds a PDRN essence against the under-eye area for 15 to 20 minutes, adding cooling and a visibly de-puffed look. Great if you want a quick, visible routine. See our PDRN eye patch comparison.
Serums and ampoules
Lightweight layers for the whole face, often with hyaluronic acid or peptides. Good for daily hydration.
Creams
Richer textures that lock in moisture, usually used at night.
Masks
Sheet or gel masks for an occasional boost before events.
Things to consider before buying
- Allergies and diet: salmon DNA is fish-derived. Collagen in many patches is marine or animal-derived too.
- Sensitive skin: reactions are more likely from partner ingredients — retinoids, fragrance, strong acids — than from PDRN itself. Patch-test first.
- Expectations: the strongest PDRN research concerns injections. Topical salmon DNA products are cosmetic: they hydrate and help skin look smoother and fresher.
- Value: compare cost per use and pack format rather than sticker price.

FAQ
Is salmon DNA skincare really made from salmon sperm?
Yes. Most cosmetic PDRN is extracted from the milt (sperm cells) of salmonid fish such as chum salmon and rainbow trout. It is then highly purified, so the finished ingredient is a clean DNA fraction that does not smell or look fishy.
Is salmon DNA skincare vegan?
No. Salmon PDRN is fish-derived. If you want a vegan option, look for plant-based PDRN, for example from ginseng, and check the full ingredient list, because collagen and other ingredients in many patches are also marine- or animal-derived.
Can I use salmon DNA skincare with a fish allergy?
It is best to be cautious. Although PDRN is highly purified, it still comes from fish. Speak to your doctor or allergist before trying it, or choose a plant-based PDRN product instead.
What is sodium DNA in skincare?
Sodium DNA is the ingredient-list name for PDRN, the purified DNA fragments used in salmon DNA skincare. In products it works as a hydrating, skin-conditioning ingredient and is often paired with collagen, peptides, caffeine or niacinamide.
Is salmon PDRN better than plant PDRN?
Salmon PDRN has a much longer research track record, which is why it is the traditional choice. Plant PDRN is newer and fish-free, which suits vegan shoppers. For eye patches, the overall formula and your own preferences matter more than a simple better-or-worse verdict.
